My Story: Growing up in America as a Deaf Asian-American was difficult because I didn't have any Deaf Asian-American role models to look up to. I focused more on my Deaf identity than Asian identity because American Sign Language is my primary language and I grew up socializing with my deaf / hard of hearing peers who are not Asian. My hearing family and I have a lack of communication because they aren’t fluent in sign language and did not bother to learn sign language to communicate with me and my deaf brother but we have love for each other. We communicated by using home basic signs, gestures, and writing on paper.. now speech to text method from phone. My brother and I had language deprivation because my family didn’t teach us Chinese language and spoke Chinese at home most of the times. So, I had struggles with my Deaf and Asian identities until I became older and traveled around the world. Traveling changed my life and perspective on life. I became more open-minded and developed my personal growth. I also learned more about myself. I visited Asian countries where my parents were born and raised in. I learned more about Asian cultures, norms, histories and met deaf international Asians. Somehow, I felt blessed because if not for my parents, I would not be where I am in America. I cannot imagine living in Asia. I’m grateful where life leads me to be here today and I can say I’m proudly Deaf Asian-American Advocate.
