Occupation: Screenwriter & PodcasterHeritage: Korean American
My Story: My parents used to tell me that they thought I was a boy, because of how much I kicked in my mom's belly. When I grew older and became aware of gender reveals and the traditions celebrating the creation of life, I asked them, "how could you think I was a boy the whole pregnancy?" I learned that in 1987, Korea put down a ban on gender reveals due to the increasing gender gap; boys were more favorable than girls, and families were quick to go through abortions when learning that they were to have a daughter. When I hear the historical and cultural context of my parents' decisions, it brings me closer to them and appreciate and admire them even more. As an only child, my parents have never made me feel like I can't be successful and accomplished due to my gender and they continually invested in my endeavors as a violinist, engineer, and now screenwriter. I'm proudest of myself for holding onto my curiosity and choosing to ask questions of my family history to better understand myself.
